Highbury College Case Study.
Highbury College is situated over four sites in and around Portsmouth and is one of the largest in South-East England with more than 16,000 students specialising in both media and construction. The college offers hundreds of courses that serve various requirements, be it to gain a qualification, take up a new hobby or improve existing skills. This is all taught in first class state-of-the-art facilities.
In October 2005, the college opened a brand new campus dedicated to specialist training in construction crafts and building services. The large centre is located at the new Harbourgate development and was purposely built to be a modern teaching environment accomodating the latest equipment and appliances.
Vanguard Contracts were employed as a major subcontractor in the project, to design and install a 3,370 sq m mezzanine floor.
Consequently a three-tier mezzanine floor was erected, providing access to the classrooms, workshops, offices and welfare facilities which mirrored the contemporary style of the centre.
A full "one hour fire rated protection" was applied to the underside of all three tiers, aesthetically finished and constructed to provide high quality performance by incorporating sound deadening Rockwool blocks. These reduce sound attenuation between levels, creating a practical learning environment.
Vanguard also assumed responsibility for the installation of a feature steel mesh perimeter balustrade system, accommodation and emergency staircases.
