Halfords Case Study

Halford's was founded in Birmingham in 1892 as a local hardware store, and over a century on is now a leading retailer of car parts. car enhancements, cycles and travel solutions in the UK and Republic of Ireland, employing over 9,000 people in their 402 stores. Halford's was one of the first retail groups to move to out of town locations, recognising the need for bigger stores in order to offer customers a wider product choice and convenient parking. At present they have 351 out of town superstores and 51 high street stores.

With the intention of developing their property portfolio, Halford's occupied a new store in Selby and refurbished the White City store in Manchester. Vanguard Contracts was awarded the responsibility of supplying and designing both retail and back-of-store mezzanine floors for both projects.

Halford's has identified the advantages of incorporating mezzanine floors into their "arcade format" stores, as it increases space for both existing and new product ranges without the need of incurring extra premises rental cost.

Vanguard also assumed responsibility for the steel balustrade and feature staircases, together with all relevant fire protection and compartment walls. The new developments have successfully improved operating margins, efficiently and cost effectively providing for additional sales growth.
